Besides, most mini excavator brands are pretty darn good so it mostly becomes a Ford, Chevy, Dodge kind of thing. Best advice would be to narrow your definition on what you plan to do with it, weigh how important the dealer relationship is to you and demo all of the brands you narrow it down to. I was told about 45 days to Port of Tampa. I got 6 additional attachments between the 2, in addition. Wow I am surprised you say that about the kobelcos. I have ran them all and they run so much faster and smoother then any other machine I have ran. I have ran all brands with the exception of komatsu. I have time on deere 120s 200s 270s and 350s and they seem to run so much slower then the Kobelcos. In my opinion the best Excavator on the market is Komatsu. I work for a large sewer and water contractor in the Chicago area and all our excavators are Komatsu. In my 16 years as an Operating Engineer I have operated every brand of excavator and I believe the komatsu is the best. The old Cat's were good but the Komatsu blows them away today.
Here in Seattle, WA is a supplier called Summit Supply. We were going to buy OEM Takeuchi tracks, but the Dealer suggested. Summit. We have them on one of our mini excavators, and on a track loader. They fit fine, and seem to be good quality, and the price is very good. The only thing that the mini/skid combo can do, that the tlb can't, is dig in tighter access areas (though the mini is not much narrower than the tlb, maybe 12") and in situations that you MUST have full rotation of the digging machine. If your primary market is small residential or landscaping than that will make the mini/skid even more appealing.
I am looking to by a new mini excavator with hydraulic thumb and a/c cab. A dealer about an hour from me is advertising Groundhog excavators with yanmar or kubota engines about half price (new) of other brands. Does anyone know anything good or bad about Groundhog? I'm currently getting prices on a Takeuchi TB 290, Bobcat E88, Cat 308 & 309, Deere 85P, Kubota KX 080-5, Case & Kobelco.
Older Deere mini-excavators were made by Yanmar, but are currently repainted Hitachis (with other tweaks as well). Case's small, medium, and large machines are NOT Kobelcos, but are rather Sumitomos (with Link-Belt). Kobelco makes the NH line for North America; Fiat produces the NH line for Europe.
