Theres too many people around here laid off willing to work for $40.00 to $50.00 an hour and charging nothing extra for fuel or travel time to the site. I have cleared a lot of property using a mini excavator in the 5-6 ton size. They are great for clearing. Combined with a grapple on a CTL for the underbrush, I can be very productive and leave a very clean finished product.

If the rates the pro's use sound high, do some more research to find the true cost of this type of business. As far as MTL vs Skid, the tires will run in the to per hr range, while the tracks seem to be in the to per hr range!!!! The MTL's are very productive, but there is a high price in repair and replacement of the u/c.
lol, we're probably not signing 2 contracts this year because the rates for a skid loader are set to per hour. i mean if i owned a 1996 bobcat with a 0 10 year old beat box, maybe thats fine, but our 50k Deeres are not sitting at a lot for 4 months out of the year almost to hope for /hr billing with a big snow storm, we have 2hr minimums and im not transporting . I'm kinda surprised you guys can get 0/day w/ a skid steer. A full size 4 wheel drive front end loader w/ hoe goes for 0/day w/operator. I can sub my skid steer guy (limited attachments included forks, teeth) for 0/day. Maybe in another year or so - I'll bite the bullet and get one myself. Locally these are the rates I bill for a skid steer and labor but I hardly ever do hourly work. an hour for tracked skid steer, 4 hour minimum .50 for labor 0 per mob, can be more depending on distance.
Depending on what skid steer you've got I'd be willing to bet your depreciation and wear and tear costs are a fair amount more than per hour.
