I bought a 1981 Case 1816B skid steer. The motor runs great, carriage and bucket cylinders operate just fine. The issue I discovered after driving it awhile is in the steering. It drives "straight" forward and reverse just fine, but any degree of turning must be done gingerly. The machine makes terrible popping sounds while it jerks into a turn.

I have been surfing these forums for awhile, ever since I wanted to buy a skid steer and then when I had questions and now finally, I have my own dilemma. I have a Case 1816 (not B or C) that has been repowered with a 20hp Onan years back. Bought it not running from a family friend for cheap knowing it had issues with a belt. I recently came across an old case 1816b skid steer and bought it for 1,500. I figure it is an outstanding upgrade from a shovel and wheel barrow. It does run. Hi I'm new here and this is my first post. Currently I'm having a rough time. I purchased an old (1988) Case 1818 skid steer about 2 weeks ago. I got it home and put it in the shop. The next morning I went out, started it and cleared snow for a couple hours. I was really pleased with it's performance. I work at a volvo dealer and a customer brought in a 1840 case skid steer. I let it warm up for about 20min and then drove it around about 5min after driving the right side drive started failing. I could push both sticks forward and it would go straight but turning with the right drive was not an option not really familiar with this piece of . I bought a 1981 Case 1816B skid steer.
