We have a 440 from about that era, had it maybe twenty years now. Pinto motor was junk so it now has a four cylinder Isuzu diesel from a Thermoking unit. Other than a few hoses and other common parts have not had to replace anything major. I had the same problem on my 440 mustang. I pulled my hydraulic motor apart, and there was an alignment plate with cogs on the end. All of the cogs were worn and when you tried to turn with that motor, the cogs would skip and make noise.
